My studio overlooks the wetlands and rehabilitated forest that we have grown and nurtured for 30 years. The changing climate impacts both our farm business and the local landscape, giving further significance to places of respite - nature reserves and habitat.
I take my paper to the waters edge, where the paperbarks stand, and immerse it in the water. Then in quiet response to the wetlands I add natural pigments, charcoal, and watercolour. The lack of control is important to me. I am present, in the flow. Back in the studio I let the work speak to me, to see what memories surface. I’m not interested in depicting a scene of the wetlands, I want to be enveloped by the paperbarks, by the mystery of the water flowing, to honour how important these places are for biodiversity.
I want to leave space for the viewer to find their own meaning, to sit with it and contemplate the importance of these local, natural waterways.
